Event Horizon Telescope

This week’s biggest science headline is likely to be about the upcoming press release from the ESA/Event Horizon Telescope. They’re planning to release the news on Thursday may 12 at 3pm CEST (that’s 9am ET). It’ll be live streamed on YouTube, details here. The Event Horizon Telescope published in April 2019 the first “image of a black hole”, but somewhat contrary to what many people expected at the time, it wasn’t the black hole in the center of our own galaxy - Sag A* - but that in the neighboring galaxy M87. The reason for this was two-fold: first, the black hole in M87 is much larger, which makes up for it being farther away, and also, the black hole in the center of the Milky Way is actually more difficult to observe because of all those stars in the Milky Way that are in the way. Most physicists now expect that the new press release will be the first image of Sag A*.I wrote about the 2019 EHT image here.

Existential Physics: A Scientist's Guide to Life's Biggest Questions

Coming out On Aug 9, 2022!A contrarian scientist wrestles with the big questions that modern physics raises, and what physics says about the human condition. Here's the first review of my new book. Book website is here. I'll be at the How The Light Gets In Festival in Hay on Wye (UK) first weekend of June. I'm giving a lecture about my new book and will take part in some debates. I'll only be there on the Saturday (June 4). You can get tickets here.

My most recent video sorts out the pros and cons of diesel engines. How much do they really contribute to air pollution and what's the car industry doing? We dug out all the relevant numbers for you.ICYMI, I recently did a collaboration with Arvin Ash and made a guest appearance in this video. In return, Arvin will be a guest in one of my videos coming up next month! You may recently have seen a video on social media showing a nanobot inseminating an egg. The video is real but it isn’t new, it dates back to 2016. More information here.
