AI Proves Good at Predicting Meta-material Properties

Researchers from the University of Amsterdam have trained software to predict properties of metamaterials and found it to work unexpectedly well, according to a paper that just appeared in PRL. Lead author Ryan van Mastrigt said “the neural networks have actually learned the mathematical rules underlying the metamaterial properties, even when we don’t know all the rules ourselves.”This finding may vastly accelerate the development of new metamaterials. I talked about applications of metamaterials in this video

Public Lecture About Existential Physics

In August, I gave a public lecture at the Royal Institution in London about my new book, Existential Physics. The recording is now available on YouTube. If you prefer to read, there’s an interview with me in The Guardian here

In this week’s video we look at everything to do with nuclear waste -- how much is there, how much of a problem is it, and what can we do with it?
